New to Twitter? Let's find you some friends...

So you finally gave in and joined Twitter.  Congrats!

OK, now what? You know what they say…

If a twitterer tweets in a forest and nobody is around to retweet it, does it make a tweet?”

Probably not.  So let’s go find some people for you to follow
(they’ll probably follow you back).

Now that you have a following, you might be tempted to start broadcasting how the world desperately needs your services.   Stop!

May I suggest you take either of two paths:

  1. Sit back and lurk .  Don’t tweet – just watch.  Do that for a really long time.
When you are ready to issue your first tweet,
if it starts with “I am…” Stop!  Go back to lurking for another month.
  2. Make your first 100 tweets about someone else.
    Yeah, about THEM not YOU.
Try making 100 comments about how good someone else is, or how interesting they are, or how you like their new avatar.
Of course if your tweet starts with “I am…” you can continue with “…totally in love with your new avatar!” – it’s the exception to the rule.

Now go out and start connecting with real people!  Oh and don’t forget to ReTweet this post!

Good advice...social communication, of any sort, doesn't start with "I".

Thank you...I am seeing people go to my website from Twitter...but no idea why, or what they saw in my tweets. I'm using tweet-later and I like that.I start my day by creating tweets and then go about my day.

your point is well taken. You have to engage others not try to sell your wares....

You mean it is not all about I or me but THEM?

Now that is a novel concept !

I want it to be all about ME...  Like the Lane Channel... All me all of the time.  Maybe with my picture on everything... that is the Realtor way.  ;^ )

Mike - Thanks for the helpful advice.  I think I do need some friends, and this will help me out.  Watch out, I may be tweeting about you soon.

This is very provoking and makes sense. If all I do is WIIFM on twitter, how can I expect people to connect? Thanks, Mike. BTW do you use Zemanta regularly?

Drew - I love them both!  You betcha!

Frank - I met and talked with Zemanta last year.  Wonderful people!  I use it ALL the time - just not all the time here in AR.
