If the Media is using Social Media...

Will they find you?  Make no mistake about it, they are looking.

Yesterday I saw a tweet by my friend Nick.  He mentioned that

And yes they did…

If you don’t know, Nick is the guy behind http://RailLife.com a supreme example of hyperlocal blogging.

Here’s Nick, Lori and the cameraman who wouldn’t lend me his camera  : (

@ljgliha @abc15 thanks for hanging out with me this am! You rock on TwitPic

Moral of the Story: The media is actively using Social Media to source their stories.  If you want to be quoted, if you want to be found, you know where you have to be!

Very cool - I've had some "odd" and interesting people find me on Twitter - I'm not sure how close they listen, but they really are listening, from friends to competition to potential referrals and referral partners.

How awesome is that!!  Does that mean we really do all get our moment of fame at some point?  It is exciting and frightening at the same time thinking about who is watching.

I'm new to this, and am trying to figure out how to use Twitter creatively, so it gathers a following.

I'm sure that just about everyone has or is using social media in one way or another. For the media, it can be an excellent research tool.

don't you love the power of twitter? Just to give another example #barcampclt was Trending! we had a great time and there were a ton of journalists there and people asking the opinions of the attendees on different subjects

That is absolutely true. More and more companies and organizations are getting on the bandwagon - from Home Depot to ABC to politicians.  It is in your best interest to make the best use of social media that you possibly can.

The extra benefit of social media had not even occured to me.  I'm still learning.  Baby step baby steps.

They sure are using it.  I've been interviewed for local mortgage stories based on information on posts I've done on forums.  I also send out press releases (mostly online) but having a relevant story with public comments on a forum or social site is a great way to get their attention.

I think there is a fear and an embrace of Twitter and other SNM.  They have the ability to seriously disrupt them, but at the same time they are great research and distribution tools.

I've done FaceBook, LinkedIn and some others, but i have been fighting the whole Twitter craze, updating the world on my every move seems a bit much to me, but i'm sure I can just scale down to business updates only and have an affective tool. Thanks for the Info.

It's amazing how fast a breaking story is tweeted, before the media gets it.  News at the speed of light.

Something along the same line has happened to me. HGTV was checking out websites and found mine. They called me and asked if I would like to supply Staged properties for their show The Unsellables.  It was great exposure for my work and the marketing value was worth more than I could ever have paid for on my own. So yes, it is important for you to have an online presence.

I agree, get social on line, you just never know who will call you and where it will lead.

Mike... Great to be aware of this.  Thanks for the information.  I've had a couple of blogs printed in the local paper, but no contact from media yet through social media.  But, I'll be around...
