"It’s not just the flow of information," Shirley said, "What it has to do with is having mechanisms where you are interacting with people who are outside of the office in a meaningful way. And I’ve got to look for every opportunity to do that–ways that aren’t scripted, ways that aren’t controlled, ways where, you know, people aren’t just complimenting you or standing up when you enter into a room, ways of staying grounded."
Shirley sounds like a social media savvy real estate agent right?
She sounds like any number of experienced bloggers here on ActiveRain.
You might expect to find her blogging. She's running mobile apps on her phone like TwitterBerry. She has many friends on Facebook and Flickr.
You'll find her reaching out to new potential buyers and sellers on LinkedIn.
She's active on Yelp and participates in local gatherings through MeetUp as well.
She spends time learning, searching and exploring new ways to connect in meaningful ways.

What if I told you Shirley wasn't really in Real Estate?
What if I told you she’s not really a “Shirley” either?
And that office she’s talking about – maybe we should call it a HOME OFFICE instead...

You see, it’s actually a quote from a recent interview with our President Elect.
Yeah that’s right! To fool you I changed just two words; Shirley and Office. That’s it.
Go back and read that again.
That sure sounds like something a modern day Real Estate Agent would and should be saying.
Which leads me to ask you…
- How are you interacting with people outside the office?
- Are you doing it in a meaningful way?
- Are you looking for every opportunity?
- Are you looking for ways that are not scripted?
And if not, do you think you should?

Way to go! Great post. Makes me always want to keep pushing to learn new lingo/tech/ideas/etc etc etc!
Mike - excellent post - social media is so important and to really be active on all of the sites is really important to make sure no opportunity goes untouched.
Kristin – Yup! Keep on learning, daily.
Sharon – It is, in part. But you don’t have to be everywhere all the time. My point is that we should be striving to make connections in a meaningful way.
Shirley won't be running mobile apps on her phone anymore... And the interaction has to be meaningful, and honest...
The actual interview was quite interesting and, when I got to the part that you quoted here, I could completely relate to what he was saying as far as staying in touch with people. As real estate agents, we need to have that mindset - that we want and need to do whatever we can to stay grounded and keep up with what's really going on with our sphere, our farms, our prospects, in our neighborhoods...

Please don't call me Shirley -- movie Airplane ;)
Aloha Mike,
Surely you jest?
No, I'm not and stop calling me Shirley!
Wonderfully clever and poignant as usual.
Peace,
Mike, very funny. I heard he was having a problem with giving it up. I'm sure he will find a way to socialize, I've been sick for a few days and it is hard to not communicate with everyone.
This kinda makes you think about things, great post. I love technology and feel that if you are not constantly trying to stay on top of it, you will get passed by. There will always be new ways to conduct business, and right now web 2.0 and social networking are growing by leaps and bounds.
These tidbits make him seem like a real person, who wishes to remain a real person. These real people attributes are exactly what helps others see us as approachable and worthy of their trust. Thanks for a great post that distills the message.
