Charlie Harden has a post I wanted to leave a comment on.
“How I connected with customers on the Internet last night!”
My comment grew and grew and then ActiveRain wouldn’t allow my comment to post (is AR still wonky?).
We’ll let’s just make it a post then!
Charlie wrote: Stuff on my AR drawing board (in no particular order)
- Somehow link up e-mail signatures and all 'social sites'
- Learn to send ActiveRain blogs to these sites automatically (Bill Gassett has some writings on this)
- Learn to create audio/video presentations for listings and Localism material
- Spend more time on Localism
- Find good (free) HTML code to WYSIWYG (whatever that is) site that will convert one to the other
- Blog weekly market reports
- Learn to upload files to YouTube
- Learn to put those neat gadgets and widgets down the right side of the blog page
- Do it all in 2 hours or less a day. (Lotsa luck!)
My quick answers to these:
- Retaggr
- RSS
- http://areweconnected.com/2008/11/how-to-use-windows-movie-maker/
- Write quality local content
- Windows Live Writer but
- OK – but please add your own interpretation of the data
- TubeMogul
- Easy with the correct html
- I’m usually done by 8 AM daily, Inbox ZERO, Feed Reader ZERO, Comments and posts done!

A newbie to social networking
Having been in the 'rain' actively for only about 4 months, I have seen sooooo much information that it is almost overwhelming. There are 36 blogs that are bookmarked for me to go back and review that have creative ideas and tips and things to implement into the business of selling real estate. But this last two weeks I've ventured out into a new world, at least for me. "Social Networking." Join me, link to me, invite me, be my friend at:
- ActiveRain
- Plaxo
- MySpace
- Plain old e-mail (which by comparison begins to seem archaic)

Some fun with this last night
Yesterday I decided to send out a mass e-mail to contacts and link to a particular ActiveRain Blog that I had posted last month and watch the statistics on that blog and the times my profile had been viewed. I jotted down the statistics to the blog and profile, signed out of ActiveRain and sent out the e-mail. Then, last evening I checked out the activity using my cell while we watched TV. The results:
- Two comments to the blog by 'real people,' not ActiveRain members
- Three e-mails from contacts (One particularly interesting said, "I'm afraid something bad may happen if I get into all those websites.")
- Profile and Blog clicks both increased by about 30 apiece (That's somewhere around 8 or 9% response rate, against about a 1 or 2% response rate on a regular 'newsletter' e-mail.
- One client joined me on Facebook as a friend (divorced with two 'twenty something' children - some potential for house hunting here!)
- One of our friends' children, a high school senior found me on MySpace
- My teenage daughter is now a connection on MySpace (MySpace seems to be 'younger')
- I heard from my uncle in Oklahoma!
- One person 'unsubscribed' from any further e-mails
Stuff on my AR drawing board (in no particular order)
- Somehow link up e-mail signatures and all 'social sites'
- Learn to send ActiveRain blogs to these sites automatically (Bill Gassett has some writings on this)
- Learn to create audio/video presentations for listings and Localism material
- Spend more time on Localism
- Find good (free) HTML code to WYSIWYG (whatever that is) site that will convert one to the other
- Blog weekly market reports
- Learn to upload files to YouTube

What are your ideas, please share!
Please let me know what you think. Share your ideas on the business of social networking and your experiences. If anyone on AR has written anything that has helped or inspired you, please let us know. Share your favorite writers. My friends Ann Allen and Elizabeth Nieves seem to be experts in all of this (and they are so far ahead of me that it's irritating!). And, of course Jason Crouch, who's instructions I have used successfully. Ah, I'm leaving someone out, but I've learned a lot from a lot of people. There are so many top notch agents on here! I'll be waiting to hear, the good, the bad and the ugly. Positives and negatives are welcome. We're supposed to get 3 inches of rain in Columbia, SC, so what else am I gonna do today? Come on and socialize a little!

Amazing Mike how well those Google alerts work:)
Okay, there is some really cool stuff here Mike. Are you using a Mac to do your stuff?
Bo
I agree with Bill, the Google Alerts really do work! And I'm sure "Bo Knows!"
Mike, thank you for posting and for sharing these 'secrets' with us! You're my new 'mentor of technology!' Seeing what you're doing all over, and outside of ActiveRain is impressive! This will save anyone a bunch of time that wants to use your links and helps.
On #8, I found out one thing on the sidebar widgets, the widgets must have been approved by ActiveRain or they won't work even with the correct HTML code.
Happy Holidays!
Bill - Yes they do! I have alerts for everything from my name, to my name spelled wrong, to twitter alerts. If I get mentioned somewhere, I want to know about it!
Bo – Nope, I’m a PC : )
Charlie – You are much too kind. It’s all my pleasure. The widgets that have issues are the ones with javascript. No .js = no problem.

I agree that everything can become overwhelming. The google alerts can really add up each day as well. Lots of good info I will have to bookmark and come back to here.
Happy Thanksgiving.
Sincerely
Tom Braatz
Mike- I'm still battling anemia and too tired have the time to get my links straight. Come Snow skiing in Bend and hook me up... free lodging???? LOL
Mike, thanks for all this information, I hope to check it all out after the holiday. As a newbie, I've had plenty of questions, and Jason Crouch and Brad Andersohn have been VERY HELPFUL. They both are so experience with the AR site. Happy Thanksgiving!
I found out about google alerts late, not that it isnt good now, but wish I had known and used from the begining of my blogging career
OK, so who do you go to for help? I can't seem to follow instructions. Then again, I am pretty new at this and I learn new stuff every day. Maybe I need to set aside a certain time each day and check out just the ideas you shared in this blog. Hope I live that long.
I have so much to catch up on with all of these new options. Thank you---this is very helpful.
Marian - Who needs instructions? I could write a blog post on each one of the 8 answers I provided. Maybe I will. Even if I do, go get in there and play. Click on a link and check them out. BTW: I'm glad AR figured out the html and commenting issues we had Since Sunday!
These are great helpful ideas....thank you for sharing them with us...
I thought I had all of my bases covered, but I have a few more to add to MY "To Do" List! Great post -- thank you.
There is one I know Mike: WhatYouSeeIsWhatYouGet (WYSIWYG). Now you know. I can't answer the rest of that, but I thought I'd let you know that one.
I don't use Windows too much, except when forced to do so. I just did a write up for Google Calendar which I am using for volunteer real estate position. Anyway I like your lists and will look to see what others have suggested.
Thanks for the succinct response followed up with details. I had signed up for Retaggr and never taken time to install it. Have it now on my primary site on my About me page. Thanks again for keeping us informed.
Hi Mike. Gotta love social networking. It still confounds me somewhat, but I have met some great local people on twitter and have generated some possible business on there and facebook. I am so addicted to twitter that I have been neglecting other sites.....like AR. :)
Thank you for the links. Have Flip, took videos, but couldn't figure out the editing. Your video is great - almost looks too easy. I'll try it over the weekend and something will be up by Monday!
Mike, Thanks for responding to Charlie's post. I can learn something from each of you! I'm bookmarking to study AFTER Thanksgiving! Enjoy the holiday...~Pat
Hi Mike,
That's some great information in a fairly small post. Thanks & Happy Thanksgiving.
Hey Mike - Thanks for the REBlog! I would have missed Charlie's AWESOME post otherwise.
Its great if you can be organized and efficient when you are working on all this stuff.
Wow ! There is a lot of info here and suggestions. Will take some time to go through, but very informative and resourceful. Thanks : )
Wow, Active Mike. That's pretty cool. I especially like the 'done by 8 am' Hmmm, when did you start? :~)
Mike, Thanks for a very informative post. Much is over my head but I am so willing to learn. Will bookmark it look at it day after Thanksgiving...won't go near a Mall on Friday!!
Lots of information in one setting I will bookmark for reading tomorrow. Thanks for sharing I am slowly but surely getting up to speed on these things.
Mike.. this is a great post.. Lots of great information.... I will come back to learn a few things on this post.
Soooo much information and I sure agree with a lot of it,....and then there are times and posts that I don't want to watch, listen, be taken to another site,,,I just want to read,...call me old fashioned, non-techie...that has gotten to be almost refreshing...enjoy your holidays and thank you for all you contribute to AR !
This post is going to require some work on myt part- thanks!!!
Mike - One word OVERWHELMED - Where do you begin. I understand the need to do a lot of what you are saying but have no idea HOW to do it. I want a reader just for my AR blogs I subscribe to but I have been told that the only time they will come through is when they go public. True or False?
