Twitter is a strange entity for the business owner. Admittedly, when I initially signed up, I didn’t "get " Twitter. I talk to many business owners daily about their marketing and time and time again the same hot spot comes up. Twitter.
Last week I quietly built a one question poll. That’s it, just one question.
Question: What stops you from marketing your business on Twitter?
“LinkedIn allows for 5 answers but also provides for great demographic results.
To keep the poll results on the clean side, I did not post or push this on Twitter. Instead I pushed to to a few on LinkedIn and then also on Facebook. (make sense?)
Dustin Luther made my day when he noted on Facebook "a linkedin poll about twitter on facebook… love the convergence ".

If you are in business, or in charge of marketing a business, I would like to have you take this simple one question poll. Click on the link or image above.
Once you have answered, feel free to leave a comment (on LinkedIn) but make sure you check out the results, especially those broken down by age and gender. They are pretty surprising! I’ll expand more on that in the future.
Please feel free to spread this poll to your contacts, the broader the the better. Reblog it, forward it, share it on almost any social media site you like. The one thing, and something that I would not normally ask, is that you don’t Tweet or Retweet this post (for the same reasons described above)

Wow, pretty interesting results there. I for one "use" it but not as efficiently as I should. I started with the "what would I tweet" mindset, once I figured that out I became a "Show me the ROI". I do use it a few times a week, sometimes daily when I remember but I feel that FB and AR work better for what I am targeting....I think at least. Twitter has been more of a "directional advertisement for other sites" to me as it seems that those on twitter are also on the other sites. It is a great way to expand your network but sofar I am not convinced it is worth updating every few hours in this line of work.....updates on a new blog or new listing....ok.
I think it is fantastic for companies offering an item or service that one would use daily such as "Starbucks Sales" or "Free Something" to generate some quick interest. However It may be me but I dont see people buying or selling a home due to a tweet connection, I think it is deeper than that. Just my .02.
There are so many avenues to pursue online that Twitter works wonders for some and nothing of others. It is all in how you plan to use the tool I guess. Good post though, I am going to revisit the results soon.
Thanks Josh!
"However It may be me but I dont see people buying or selling a home due to a tweet connection, I think it is deeper than that"
Absolutely! In the very basic sense, I think any social media platform is just a place to start the conversation. I can't imagine anyone chosing to use an Agent based on a single craigslist ad, or blog post, or...
I agree that a single post or tweet or wall message will not lead to the choice of an agent. Having said that, I did sell my first condo because of one postcard! As for Twitter, with all the applications available, it is the easiest of all the SN sites out there to integrate and become active on... Much simpler to tweet a link or photo than to write a blog post.
Wow, I am not doing it, and interesting percentage for the ROI for the youngest agent group. I am not in that age group, but that was my mindset. Interesting.
Bill -
That's the difference I see. The buyer didn't call you up after reading the postcard and said "I want to write an offer!" or did they? : )
Twitter is an interesting tool that I don't think anyone really has been able to figure out it's signifcance. I don't see twitter getting me a sale, but I do think it's a great tool to make quick updates in one place and push to your site, blog, etc., all the mean while hopefully increasing the SEO of your website.
Hi, Mike!
I finally joined Facebook (ha, ha) but haven't joined Tweeter, yet. I'm still listening as to how this will make me more productive. You obviously are a member, how has this helped you in your business?
I was recently interviewed by Jeff Shore about Twitter. Here is what I said:
Social Media in Homebuilding
Jeff Shore
I had an e-mail conversation with one of the best of the best when it comes to using social media to drive new business - Kelly Noble of Campbell Homes in Colorado. Specifically, how does a builder utilize Twitter. Here you go:
JEFF: Kelly, let's start with Twitter. Are you seeing direct results from your Twitter posts?
KELLY: Based on my monthly tracking I have found that only seven people have come to my website directly from Twitter. This does not discourage me at all because most of the time I am not directing people to my website from Twitter but also to my blog site, to my ActiveRain blog, to my Facebook page, to interesting articles and the like.
JEFF: Do you think Twitter is a viable marketing option for builders?
KELLY: I am very new at Twitter so I am still trying to get my bearings, but I have recently started to solicit my Facebook fan page and my twitter account to my leads so that they can follow me and get the most up to date information there is. Currently I have more Realtors following me then prospects, but I do a ton of Realtor marketing so this does not surprise me.
JEFF: How do you see Twitter being used by homebuilders?
KELLY: I think that twitter and all the other social media outlets are there to help build a brand and build relationships, along with getting more buyers. I have started to accomplish the later goals so I am feeling pretty good!

Kelly - Interesting. 7 out of how many vistors?
I don't push from twitter to my website at all.
I just looked at the last month of data for my site http://AreWeConnected.com
Yet for me referrals from Twitter are higher than Facebook, ActiveRain and so on.
I also know that this number is somewhat fuzzy as Google Analytics and most others have a hard time tracking traffic from 301 redirects (shortened URLs).
There are so many worthwhile options... It takes learning about something and leveraging it to the max.
